GARMENT CARE
Garments that are not washed or cared for in accordance with the following care instructions and advice are automatically void of any guarantee and will not be accepted as a return for any reason.
Also not covered is any damage caused to fabrics or trims in areas such as the derriere, chest, abdomen and under arms through abrasion, or contact with body oil, perspiration, perfume, hair spray, deodorant, tanning lotion etc, any or all of which will affect the sparkle and shine of the fabric and trims, as well as the Lycra/Spandex fibres - which are the bits that allow the fabric to stretch and recover. Please be aware.
Any costume embellished with hand painted / dyed applique or feathers / boa is usually considered a 'no wash' item unless these embellishments are first removed.
However if this is not practical, most odours can be removed by lightly spritzing the inside of garments with a mix of half and half distilled water and Vodka (just use a really cheap one). Lipstick and other small marks can be gently spot cleaned using a very mild soap and COLD water. Sometimes fabrics may show a water stain after cleaning but these marks will probably never been seen ‘from stage’.
Other costumes can be safely cleaned by following the Fabric Care #1 instructions.
If really necessary, Mesh, Crystalene or Chiffon skirts or drapes can be lightly ironed or steamed using a heat suitable for nylon / polyester.
Fabric Care #1
Costumes or Leotards using metallic, holographic, mystique type, or glitter fabrics or any costumes or leotards adorned with rhinestones:
Always check for any loose stitching or trimmings and repair prior to cleaning.
Add 2 – 3 tablespoons of table salt (this sanitizes) to a sink full of cold water. Hand wash by gently swishing garment around. Do not rub fabric together. Do not leave to soak. Remove from the water supporting the weight and lay on a towel. Roll up to remove as much excess water as possible then lay or carefully hang to dry in shade, again supporting as much weight as possible.
DO NOT USE ANY SOAP, DETERGENT, OXYCLEAN OR PRODUCTS CONTAINING BLEACH. DO NOT SPIN, DRY CLEAN, IRON OR USE AN ELECTRIC DRIER.
ONLY USE A COOL IRON ON DRAPES OR SKIRTS IF NECESSARY.
Fabric Care # 2
Plain nylon, polyester and velvet Lycra or Spandex with no further adornment.
Turn garment inside out. Hand or machine wash separately in cold water on gentle cycle using a 'mild soap' only if necessary. Lay garment on a towel and roll up to remove excess water then hang to dry in shade.
DO NOT USE ANY SOAP, DETERGENT, OXYCLEAN OR PRODUCTS CONTAINING BLEACH. DO NOT SPIN, DRY CLEAN, IRON OR USE AN ELECTRIC DRYER.
COSTUME STORAGE
Always spot clean, air out and store completely dry in a box, wardrobe or cloth bag. Never store in plastic!
Avoid hanging any costumes by elastic straps or sheer ‘skin’ fabric shoulders as this will ultimately cause stretch damage, especially if the costume has heavy stoning or a very full skirt. Very lightweight leotard type costumes can be hung in a regular manner or looped over a padded coat hanger. Costumes with skirts should be flipped upside down and either hung by the gusset or preferably by using a ‘clip type’ hanger attached to each side of the briefs at the hip level so the skirts fall free encasing the leotard base.
TIARAS and HAIR PIECES
Spray your hair before clipping on any headwear as aerosols can very quickly dull the surface of rhinestones and other sparkly trims and also make any flowers/feathers very sticky.
For obvious reasons, never store your head wear loose amongst your costumes and shoes. Best is in a box with tissue paper or bubble wrap so it doesn’t get damaged moving around.
